Connectivity refers to the method in which the headphones connect to the audio source. Headphones can be either wired or wireless.
The Meze Audio 109 PRO is a dynamic driver headphone with an open-back, over-ear design from Antonio Meze and his team from Meze Audio. Coming in at $799, the Meze 109 PRO is easily one of the best looking and most comfortable pairs of headphones you'll find in this price range. The 109 PRO's dynamic drivers produce incredible detail and have upper treble airiness that will satisfy anyone looking at more expensive options like the Hifiman Arya or the Sennheiser HD 800S but are not looking to spend over $1k.
Meze Audio 109 PRO - the most anticipated release of 2022 - is finally here
The Meze Audio 109 PRO is Meze Audio's first dynamic open-back headphone, demonstrating Meze Audio's commitment to go beyond faithful reproduction of sound and convey pure emotion. In a world of fast-moving technology, Meze relies on proven foundations.
The new 50mm dynamic driver, assembled and tuned with the utmost precision, allowed Meze to push the boundaries of speed, accuracy and dynamic range.
Main features:
To achieve the acoustic goals set for the 109 PRO, Meze Audio focused their R&D work on materials research, looking for the perfect balance between cone mass and stiffness to maximize the headphones' sonic capabilities.
Meze Audio's search led to the development of the 109 Series dual cone diaphragm - a combination of beryllium-coated polymer, cellulose and carbon fibre composite and a copper-zinc alloy.
Acoustic design at its finest - the spider-like structure and acoustically transparent grille inside the ear cup exposes the driver from both sides, creating Meze's most open soundscape yet.
The velour pads comfortably enclose the ears and ensure an optimal seal to produce a natural sound.Since velour is much softer and more breathable than leather, it also prevents sweat build-up and overheating during extended listening sessions.
The 109 PRO is all about comfort - from the headphone's structural design to the choice of materials, all decisions have been carefully made to ensure the final product meets our highest standards of ergonomics.
With this in mind, Meze Audio have combined walnut wood, zinc, manganese steel and vegan leather into a comfortable, lightweight yet extremely strong structure.
Meticulously tuned by Meze's in-house engineering team, the 109 PRO offers an emotionally engaging sound with great detail, clarity and just the right amount of punch.
Its organic character, coupled with superior dynamics, excellent imaging and full-bodied voices, brings soul-stirring details to life.Plus, it's easy to control from most devices, whether they're portable sources or complex home systems.
Driver features the 109 series Dual Membrane Diaphragm – a combination of Beryllium-coated polymer, cellulose + carbon fibre composite and copper-zinc alloy

I’m happy with the product. I didn’t care for Fed Ex, but that’s not in your control.
Everything was great except FedEx did not allow me to hold the package in a store for pickup. Only the vendor (you) can do that. This required me to take off work an entire day waiting for a package. Please find a way to allow consumers to choose the drop off / pickup location.
Easily the best purchase made audio wise. From the customer service to the most knowledgeable associates from headphones.com. I am at the 55 hour mark of breaking into the headphones. They just sound so fun and the clarity is actually insane (coming from an hd560, hd600 and sundara). Anyone looking into investing on a good pair of headphones with the best sound possible under a 800-1000. This is it. This is end game for me. Appreciate everyone working at headphones.com. Absolute goats!
I really like the 109 Pro. I don't typically enjoy headphones described as sounding bright like most versions of the Arya and HE1000SE. However, this headphone doesn't really bother me.
I primarily bought this headphone for comfort which the 109 Pro has in spades. Soundstage and imaging are solid. Bass is good enough for my casual listening preference. The only area I find the 109 Pro lacking in is clarity. It is plenty detailed, but it doesn't sound quite as clear as an Arya or LCD-X.
First of all, I want to thank the folks at Headphones.com for their quick and professional service. Great job. I ordered the Meze 109 Pro headphones based on several recommendations and I'm glad I did. These are great sounding headphones and a true piece of engineering. They are very comfortable to wear with no adjustment necessary. The designers considered everything when designing these headphones. From the ergonomics to the sound quality and everything in between these are first class music to my ears.
Absolutely amazing!
The experience is expansive, airy, deep, and rich. The texturing is fantastic - as if there are multiple drivers in the earcups versus the single 50mm hybrid. The sound resonates in beautiful, transparent coherence across the frequency range (especially the bass region).
Burn in is real. Palpable. Brand new, the sound was crystalline with a slight granularity and subtle tightness about it (especially the treble region). But with 30-40 hours of use everything started becoming significantly smoother, almost buttery and relaxed in the best possible way, and it continues to sweeten. It just shines. I'm grinning wide.
I love the look, feel, and sound of the 109. I upgraded from HD650's and really appreciate the increased bass, comfort, and soundstage. The build quality is superb so far too.
The burn in period on these is absolutely true. Right out of the box listening to these I was kind of disappointed didn’t sound very special but, I decided to let them burn in overnight for a few hours because of most of the reviews I’ve read. I gotta say over the next few days of burning in and listening to them, the headphones absolutely came alive. They have a beautiful soundstage, great positioning of the instrument and vocals, deep bass but not overwhelming while still holding a lot of detail in the rest of the frequencies. I can’t compare them to any other highend headphones as these are my first, thoughI have to say the price is absolutely justified on these. The build quality is superb, they are stunning art pieces in and of themselves, pair that with great sound and it’s a no brainer that these are one of the best headphones in the under 1000 category.
I bought these headphones eight months ago and absolutely love them! These are my "go to" cans for all genres of music. They sound sublime! The 109 Pro's are the most comfortable headphones I own and I can listen to them for hours. They did take a bit of burn in, but quickly sounded fantastic and have only gotten better. Highly recommended! I'd also highly recommend Headphones.com. Terrific service!
I was trying to figure out what headphones would be super comfortable while having excellent sound. Luckily I rolled right when I decided to get these. I’m coming from a pair of 6xx and wanted to step up to something with a bit more bass and a really nice sound signature. Everything just feels good to my ears with these, the bass is a little bit thick, the mid-range feels slightly warm, and the treble although a little bright isn’t too much and just adds a nice crispness to the sound. I have these paired with a JDS Element III running off my computer.
These are the most amazing set of headphones I’ve listened to so far, the are a 10/10 from me and I am supper happy with my purchase.
I spent 4 months carefully doing research and saving up for these, constantly talking myself in and out of getting them. Finally I hit the big red button and purchased them. A couple days later they arrive and I did a test. I currently own a pair of hd6xx’s and hifiman sundaras. I listened to a song on my sundaras and then immediately switched to these. I got scared for a moment, worrying I had wasted my money until I kept listening. The more songs I listened to the more I realized how truly amazing these things are. They aren’t as wide as my sundaras, or as intimate as my 6xx but they feel like raw sound, music is not coming from speakers it simple envelopes you and you forget that you have them on. The build is amazing and it’s possibly the most beautiful headphone on the market. If you have any doubts to get it don’t, it will be worth it.
I’ll set the scene: 6am on a workday. I have 30 minutes to open up and try these new Meze 109 Pro’s before leaving for work. They arrived late the night before and I can’t wait another minute to try them. I plug them into my iPhone with my Dragonfly Red and camera adapter, choose an acoustic guitar heavy song and…wait for it… my eyes teared up with happiness. OMG- they are amazing and I know they will sound even better when I can use my laptop and Schiit Hel DAC/Amp. I prefer a neutral more analytic sound. I also like slightly more treble and if you are like me- these are for you. This is not to say that there isn’t any base- there definitely is but these are not bass heavy. I also own the HD6XX’s and while they are a great value and have done well for long listening sessions, I felt like they were veiled, i’ve always gotten the sense that they were missing something for me and I found it in the Meze’s- crisp and clear, I can hear everything. What sounds good is such an individual thing and you can listen all day to the reviews (and I do- thank you Resolve, Zeos, Chrono, FC -Construct, DMS, Josh Valour) but in the end it’s so personal. Try these if what I described sounds like what you prefer. Thanks Headphone.com!
These are my first headphones above entry level. The sound is FANTASTIC! I could not be happier. I highly recommend them to anyone not looking to spend thousands more. Their reputation for comfort is very well desrved, at least for my head! Headphones.com provided excellent support before purchase - when I was trying to pick something. And the purchase experience was excellent - super fast shipment. I was listening to them the day after purchase.
Easily the best combination of technical performance, soulful tone, and dynamic punch that I have ever heard. Very easy to drive, no expensive amps needed, yet it also scales with more capable source gear. This is also the only headphone Ive ever owned that can play any genre of music well.
Meze 109 Pros are amazing! I’m not much of a techno geek, but I enjoy a range of music and have tried a number of headphones and IEMs over the years, including Sennheisers (6xx and 800), Grado Labs, airpods 1 and 2, and most recently FIIO FH9. I use the airpods 2 for calls. They’re quite good for music too, but I settled on the FH9s for music. I really enjoy their balanced and rich sound, from bass to treble.
Recently, I wondered about open-back headphones. So, like many of you, I read reviews and watched youtube videos about a bunch. No matter what the price, seems there are pros and cons to all. Impossible to make a choice without getting bunch, trying them out, choosing my favorite and returning the rest. I don’t want to spend my time doing that, and besides, choosing one after a short test may not last the test of time.
But when I kept seeing amazing reviews of the Meze 109 Pros, I decided to dive in. Gotta say, at first I was sorely disappointed. Weak bass, mids were ok, but the treble was not good. Tried Rickie Lee Jones (a test for any phone/IEM with treble issues) - just terrible. Though a good deal more expensive, the 109s were no match for my FIIO FH9s. So I bought a couple of upgrade cables - Meze silver and Fog Audio. I prefer the way both look, but can’t say I heard any difference in the sound. After a few days, I almost returned the 109s, particularly after reading a bunch of reviews that had the same complaint about the treble response.
But they look beautiful and are very comfortable so I decided to give it another try. I plugged them into my desktop, fired up Prince and Springsteen at a fairly loud volume and closed the door. Checked them about 3 hours later and …. Magic! They sound fantastic!
I did email support at Headphone.com (where I bought them) and Meze. Both responded right away. Great support! Kudos to both!! Meze told me they recommend burning in new phones for 40 hours. I’m thinking they’re just going to sound better. Very pleased with my purchase.
When I was looking for a new pair of headphones I wanted something that put emphasis on comfort. Thankfully with these have not only been the most comfortable headphones but the most enjoyable sounding headphones at the same time. Looks are second to none, all the accessories matched my wierd needs, sound is a bit treble sensitive but not at all neutral, warm and reaches deep into the sub bass, soundstage is quite good as is the layering and separation of instruments but not overly so. Last thing being is the comfort, which I can confidently where these for hours and not have any issues. Also has very strong multimedia use, songs, games, movies, this headphone handles them like a real champ.
I absolutely love these headphones except for one thing. The stock cable is in my opinion horrible. I’ve had hundred dollar gaming headsets with better cables. That is my one and only complaint about them. If you get a cable for them I don’t see why you’d really ever need anything else.
I actually had a chance to buy this back in early November. I wish I had gotten it then. The comfort is incredible. The pad interior could be a tiny bit wider, but overall, it is still one of the most comfortable headphones I have tried. As for the sound, what is there to say that hasn't already been said? I have run this headphone off an Ifi Zen DAC/Zen Can stack, a Topping G5 (purchased right here on headphones.com), and the Qudelix 5K, one of the most persatile portable DAC/amp combos around if they can power your gear. These sound amazing on all equipment, but I think probably most on the Topping G5. I love the crisp treble, the punchy, but not bloated, bass, and the vocals are forward with just a hint of spice. Ever since I was a child, this is the kind of sound signature I have preferred. To date, this is the most expensive headphone I have ever purchased by far, and it is easily one I can recommend to anybody wanting to upgrade their headphones. That does not mean I think it's perfect. For $800, the fact that no extra earpads were included is almost worth taking off a star. Yes, two cables of different lengths were included, but by the feel of them, they probably cost a combined $10. The fact that every pair of earpads at this price level doesn't come with spare pads is definitely something to make fun of the industry for. I have headphones half the price that come with extra pads, and I'm sure there are brands out there that have even cheaper products that also come with spare earpads. If the sound and comfort weren't so great, I would certainly have taken off a star for this. Now one thing that I am also going to point out, although this is by no means a deal breaker, is that I wish more headphone manufacturers could follow in the path of Sennheiser and Rode and put braille indicators on their headphones to help blind folks differentiate left and right sides. Again, this is certainly just a personal preference and not something I can fault Meze for. Okay, enough rambling. In summary, I highly recommend this headphone. If you have a quality cable, I do recommend using that as I find the default cables, while serviceable, far from excellent, one being too short and one too long. Oh, and Meze, show customer appreciation and put in an extra pair of pads. On a final note, for those of you wanting a picture, you get the same picture as this blind guy does. :)
Great job getting the Meze 109 headphones to me within a couple days. Thank you.
I'm 71, listen to high resolution surround classical music and, at home, prefer my surround speaker system. But, we do travel and I decided to invest in a quality headphone system. My personality is to do my research before making a purchase. The Meze 109 came out on top (within my price range). I also purchased a Topping G5 portable DAC/AMP. I'm using the stock cable from Meze.
The first day was primarily "burn-in" of the DAC and Headphones. I use JRiver Media Center on my XPS laptop (all music files are on external SSD drives). USB from laptop to G5. I set up a long playlist of music and just let it run. The following day, I tested stereo DSD music a well as surround DXD 24/352.8 music (mixed down to stereo). The results were excellent! All instruments and vocals sounded full and lifelike. Orchestra to chamber music to solo instrument music all sounded better than expected. Soundstage width and depth are greatly aided by the open back feature. Comfort is wonderful.
Will the headphones replace my speaker system? Absolutely not! But, they sound better and better every day.

I enjoy these but they were a bit short on the bass for me personally. By far one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. I love the classy look and style. I could not part with them so my wife now enjoys them.
I’ve enjoyed a number of headphones and IEMs (Audeze LCD-2 Classics, LCD-XC, Sennheiser 6XX, Thieaudio Monarch Mk. I, Moondrop Blessing Dusk), but these Meze Pro 109s deliver by far the most visceral joy. They are SUCH a delight!!
I’ll likely sell all my other headphones and IEMs because I expect to only ever reach for these. Seriously.
I’ve never owned a product that feels this special. I’m so glad I’ve stayed in the online audiophile community because I doubt any of my friends would’ve recommended these—few are really in the market for these near $1,000 products.
