Description

The HE1000 V4 Planar Magnetic Open-Back Headphones from Hifiman have been updated from their previous model HE1000 headphones and offer redesigned earpads that are thick with an asymmetrical shape, a stronger cable, and polyester earpad surfaces instead of velour material to increase sound transparency for use in the home, studio, with portable devices, and more.

Featuring diaphragms so thin they are measured in nanometer thickness, the result is a pair of headphones that have a frequency response of 8 Hz to 65 kHz and an impedance of 32 Ohms. Their updated headband design will accommodate a wider range of head sizes. Their planar driver is the cornerstone of their remarkable sound.

The headphones have an updated earcup design that is trimmed down in size for a slimmer, sleeker look; they are now 11mm in thickness, a significant reduction in size from the original model's 14mm measurement. The earpads have become thicker with an asymmetrical shape that follows the form of the earcups. They are supplied with a cable that is made stronger with the improved materials of crystalline copper and crystalline silver wire, and built with a wide frequency range, low signal loss, and enhanced emphasis on their low-end for quality audio reproduction. A single-ended 1/4" cable is included along with a balanced 4-pin XLR cable.

Key Features
  • These headphones feature an ultra-thin diaphragm for lightning-fast response, uncanny detail, and ultra-low distortion
  • They have a window-shade grille design that greatly reduces sonic reflections for clearer sound
  • The headphones have a lightweight, ergonomic headband for a better fit, improved sound, and better comfort for longer-term listening. They have been designed to accommodate a wider range of head sizes
  • Their Asymmetrical earcups follow the natural shape of the human ear and have been updated from the original 14mm in thickness to 11mm in thickness
  • They have a user-replaceable connector-cable design that allows for easily switching to or from other cables
  • The supplied cables are made stronger by incorporating crystalline copper and crystalline silver wire. They are custom designed for wide frequency range, low signal loss, and enhanced emphasis on the low-end for quality audio reproduction
  • The earpad surface that makes contact with the head has been changed from velour to polyester to increase sound transparency

Sensitivity More information
Headphone sensitivity measures how loud a pair of headphones will be at a given signal strength. Headphones with higher sensitivity ratings will produce louder sounds than headphones with lower sensitivity ratings. It is measured in dB SPL (decibels of sound pressure level) per unit of power (typically 1 milliWatt) or sometimes unit of voltage (typically 1 Volt) from the source at a frequency of 1 kHz.
90dB
Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) More information
When driving headphones at high volumes, it is possible for the diaphragm (the ‘speaker’ inside the headphones) to be unable to move fast enough. This leads to distortion, manifesting itself as crackling, popping or the alteration of musical notes. Most headphones will fall below 1% THD.
Frequency Response More information
Headphone frequency response refers to the frequency-specific sensitivity of the output. Frequency responses show the range that headphones are capable of reproducing—a graph shows which frequencies are accentuated over others. The ideal range covers the audible sound range of 20 Hz – 20 kHz.
8Hz-65KHz

I've been listening to a pair of HE1k daily for 3-4 hours in average ever since I received them (more than a month now) and compared them back and forth with the other headphones from my fleet (some of which can be seen on the photo). Overall, I'm quite impressed by Hifiman's rendition. They are also very comfortable and just feel nice and well-made. In terms of sound, it is one of the most revealing headsets I've ever had a chance to own, the previous champion was a pair of Sony MDR-EX1000. The HE1k is much smoother, cleaner and can do quite well without equalization on various sources: starting from compact portable 'whistles' such as Cayin 1-bit DAC/Amp combo and all the way to Denafrips top tier R2R DACs paired with Flux Lab Acoustics Mentor. I would describe the sound as airy, non-fatiguing and fitting for a wide variety of music genres. I'm especially enjoying acoustic music and vocals with them. My previous all-time favorites for this use case was a pair of Verum Audio One. Hifiman's HE1k is simply a bit more of everything I enjoyed on Verum Audio's headset.

+ Huge soundstage - gives me a similar feeling that the HD800s gave but the HE1000s extend vertically more than any other headphone I own or have tried. I've gone back and started playing some of my favorite games and listening to my favorite tracks and it feels as if I'm experiencing them the way they were meant to be. + Incredibly detailed - I haven't been able to say this since I first got into the hobby but this is the first time in a long time that I'm very clearly hearing things I wasn't able to before. The imaging and soundstage help a lot here as everything isn't getting muddled together. Combine that with the detail these are able to pull out and it's just so easy to pinpoint everything. + Speed. I suppose I never truly paid attention to the speed of headphones throughout my indulgence in the hobby, but after the HE1000s, I see how they can really altar the excitement you get from content. The bass hits with a nice solid slam, doesn't overstay its welcome, and hits immediately again with the same impact. Bass heavy music and video games are treat because of this. And if you get these cans and are a little disappointed by the low end, they take EQ like an absolute champ. I cranked up the 80hz range by 4db and the rest of the sound range was unaffected. I still got the same detail and soundstage, but with more bass. - Build quality is okay. They don't feel cheap, but they don't feel as well put together as many other headphones in this price range that I've tried. Hifiman doesn't have the best reputation for QC, so I'm praying I wont run into any issues here down the line. The cables it comes with are nothing to write home about. You should definitely get your own for $30-$40. Final thoughts : I'll never say I found my "endgame" pair of anything - I know that'll never be true. BUT, I've finally found a pair of headphones that makes me feel as if I can sell the rest of my collection and not miss them for their specific characteristics because these just do that much of an amazing job all around. At $1100, I don't think you can do much better than these until you start getting into the thousands of dollars range for diminishing returns.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

I bought it partly because it was on sale for 62% off, but I already own Focal Clear headphones. The V4s are huge, and they sound good, but I don't notice the huge sound stage that I was expecting. Also, they are not as comfortable to wear as the Focal Clears.

I’ll start off with the build quality. The HE1000 Stealth is very well built. You can tell they use very high quality materials to make the headphones. They are very comfortable and can be worn for a long period of time without an issue. The sound is absolutely stunning. The detail is exceptional and they sound very clear and precise. Overall I’m very impressed with the quality and performance of the HE1000 Stealth.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

I’ve only had for a few days, but initial impressions: - Extremely comfortable, I was prepared for them to be a little heavy, but not at all. I can wear for hours without any discomfort or fatigue. - Great detail retrieval + very good bass. This seems like a tough combo for most headphones to pull off. - These seem very easy to drive for high-end headphones. I have a Topping A90 Pro and it has way more power than is needed. I don’t know all of the technical specs, but I would guess these will perform well with less powerful amps. - Not as “easy listening” as a pair of ZMF Verite closed I own, but that is why I bought them. I wanted a compliment that had better detail, wider imaging, planar vs dynamic and open back vs closed back, and so far they seem like a great compliment.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

The HE1000 V2 Stealth are spectacular. Have listened for few weeks and compared to the Ananda quite a bit. The Ananda were my favorite headphones, but the HE1000 are superior in most aspects. Both have a tall and spacious soundstage, but the HE1000 is wider left to right, and instruments can be picked out with more clarity. In groups or orchestras in a large space, you're aware of echo in the large space, which is quite amazing. The HE1000 bass goes deeper and has more definition. The upper bass / lower mids seem stronger on the HE1000, and this gives a more speaker-like presentation. The mids and timbre are a little more natural and precise on the HE1000. The Ananda has a small mid-treble peak, but the HE1000 seems smoother in this range. In comparisons the Ananda sounds brighter in mid-treble. High violins sound a bit shrill on the Ananda, but the HE1000 sounds sweeter and more natural, so are very good for classical. Highly recommended, these are so good I don't care what the Susvara sounds like.

Good build, very comfortable. Bass is to my taste, unfortunately treble a bit too aggressive and bright for me. Could see a lot of people enjoying this headphone if they are looking for an aggressive, exciting and engaging sound.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

If you're on the edge, just order these, and thank me later while you're bathing in musical bliss. Endgame quality for sure, to me they excel in every category that I'm able to assess: bass/mids/treble quality, overall tonality, low/high extension, soundstage, imaging, detail. I own many headphones, most of which I plan to sell after getting this HE1000 Stealth. Some comparisons to the others I own: - ZMF Aeolus: in comparison, the highs are so lacking, less detail / liveliness - they sound relatively dull - Focal Elex: I still love the sound of these, especially the bass and dynamics, but the soundstage is claustrophobic, they're less resolving, and the tonality is a bit strange. Planning to replace with Stellia which will also double as my closed-back - LCD-2: these are overall kinda similar to the HE1000S but slightly less good in every way except bass, where I think they do have a slight advantage in quality/texture - LCD-2 closed: I can't identify anything wrong with these, but for some reason I never crave to listen to them. Excellent bass, though it's not punchy, it's strong, smooth, textured, and extended. Plan to replace with Stellia as my closed-back - Sennheiser HD6xx: actually I'll keep this one for change of pace and those perfect mids :)) To recap I think they're amazing and best of any headphone I've heard, well worth the price.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

Truly incredible headphones. I tried the Arya Stealth for about a month and gave them a good shot as my first planar, but never enjoyed them. They were extremely clear and impressive at first, however they are too bright and no character at all. Found myself not able to listen for any length of time without getting a headache. The HE1000 Stealth are completely different and from the first second I tried them, they are exactly what I was searching for. They are sooo smooth and even a slight warm character. Absolutely no EQ needed at all as the tuning is excellent out of the box. Exactly what I was looking for in an end-game headphone and very happy with how these sound.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

Hard to go wrong at the new asking price of 1399.00, Hifiman continues to disrupt the headphone market with incredible deals. I owned the Arya v3 for a bit, I admired its technicalities but found myself skipping around tracks and never truly enjoying them. I found them sterile and peaky, despite my bets efforts to clam them down with EQ. The He 1000 v3 is quite different, it is very warm, the dynamics are a bit better, and the treble is ooooh so smooth addictive, it washes over you. Just lift that 1-2k range up a bit and you have a wonderfully tuned headphone. If you do want to listen to metal or rock, then just bump 3k down a bit to relax the electric guitars, and adjust the treble to your liking. If you are not adverse to EQ, then this can be a wonderfully versatile headphone. In short, The He1000 v3 is very musical, amazingly detailed, and effortless in it presentation, but also more forgiving than the Arya. I consider it a significant upgrade in tonality and detail. This is my endgame, I can confidently say that I see no reason to continue chasing this Dragon.

Hifiman HE1000 V4 Headphones - Stealth Magnet Edition

First, I want to commend Headphones.com for their excellent customer service. The headphones arrived a day early! The unboxing was pretty uneventful, actually. The packaging is pretty simplistic. Sort of a screw top wine opening experience as opposed to the pomp and circumstance of the cork. But all that is forgotten when they come out of the box. These are extremely good-looking headphones in my opinion. The wood accents are beautiful, and the build is excellent. They have a quality feel when you hold them. The moving parts on the HE1000 V2 Stealth do so in a precise and perfect manner, there are no wobbles, squeaks or rattles as you manipulate them. It’s a beautiful and solid piece. Then you put them on. Along with next-level looks, you get next-level comfort as well. My ears easily go into the cups and do not touch anything once in there. They are very light and feel wonderful on the head. Clamp force to me is just right. You can wear these as long as you like. The stock cables are actually not bad. They are the black cables with the rubberized jacket. I really like the fact that they provided a balanced cable along with the 1/4" single ended cable. Now I am not one that is ever at a loss for words. But when I played the first track, “Master James of St. George” by Big Big Train, I couldn’t believe it. My gut reaction was almost emotional. This truly is next-level sound. The way you can hear drums and percussion is incredible. The intro to Big Big Train’s “Kingmaker” is a triumph by Nick D’Virgilio on the drums, and you can hear every nuance. I am actually hearing things in songs that I had not heard before. This is HUGE for me. These headphones are the real deal. Every aspect of the FR is beautifully delivered. Natural Timbre is unlike anything I have experienced to date. A true premium product. They will take your music to a whole new level.

These are my first high end headphone and they sound absolutely excellent. Context: I own the U12T, IER Z1R, QDC Anole V14, Thieaudio Monarch MkII, UM Mest MkI, etc… These headphones sound noticeably better than these expensive IEMs that I own. Also, I know this review is not in depth as I am in a rush but… These headphones are worth every penny, especially for 1400 dollars on sale… SHEESH. GG WP HifiMan, I am now a big fan. :)

Wonderful sound. The highs are not as bright as Arya but brighter than Focal Clear or Hifiman Susvara. Wonderful bass/warmth. Pairs well with many amps. Very intimate Soundstage, tall and sounds like the singer is singing right to you on the front row of a concert. Comfort is great on these headphones.
