Aune has been on an impressive streak with their recent releases, and the new Aune N7 headphone amplifier aims to keep that momentum going at an accessible $399 price point. Featuring a discrete design and promising nearly 7 watts of output power into 32 ohms, the N7 makes a headline claim of operating in Class A.

However, testing on a wattmeter reveals that power draw from the wall increases alongside signal output—a classic signature of a high-bias Class AB design rather than a true Class A circuit. While manufacturers ought to be more transparent about marketing terms, an amplifier's operating class does not inherently dictate sound quality, and the N7's real-world performance speaks far louder than its marketing.

The physical build of the N7 is sleek, compact, and rock solid, sporting a matte black chassis lined with integrated cooling fins. A crisp front display sits between the volume encoder and the headphone outputs, which feature a 4.4 mm Pentaconn balanced jack alongside a standard 1/4-inch single-ended port.

The resistor-ladder volume control ensures perfect channel balance all the way down to quiet listening levels, operating in ~1.8 dB steps. While both modes yield identical maximum output power, high-current mode introduces a slight rise in upper-treble distortion that subjectively adds extra punch and immediacy to energetic tracks, whereas low-current mode measures slightly cleaner and offers a smoother response.

Subjectively, the N7 delivers a neutral, rich, and spacious presentation that fills in the weight and acoustic body often missing from clinical, op-amp-based competitors. It avoids artificial sharpness while remaining impressively clear and non-congested, evoking the organic delivery of far more expensive discrete amplifiers like the Holo Bliss.

Combined with excellent bench results, low noise, and robust driving power, the Aune N7 stands out as an easy default recommendation for anyone seeking high-end desktop performance without breaking the bank.
