An Electrostatic Headphone That's Easy to Recommend

The Hongshu Audio EH-1 electrostatic system, bundled with its own EHA-1 Energizer for $650, marks a major shift in making electrostatic (estat for short) driver technology accessible and affordable. Estats have historically been pretty hard to get in the US, required specialized energizer setups, or simply priced out most casual audiophiles due to most of them being comfortably over $1000 USD.
However, EH-1 is distributed in the US by Poloyo Audio, and instead of just being a headphone, EH-1 is a complete electrostatic headphone system fit into a remarkably compact footprint, without forcing buyers into four-figure territory due to its (relatively) modest $650 USD price tag.
The physical design balances a clean, silver-and-black aesthetic with subtle custom touches like an engraved floral outline on the ear cups and a pop of color from the brown leatherette headband. As far as accessories you, of course, get the included EHA-1 energizer, along with a typical five-pin Stax-style ribbon cable.
While the construction is predominantly metal, the plastic headband adjustment arms arrived somewhat loose from the factory, though they can easily be locked in place using an Allen key... and people may want to do this quickly, because sliding the adjustment mechanism too much may chip the black paint on the inside of the headband.
Minor usability quirks include occasional driver crinkling when adjusting sealed front-volume pressure and, on my unit, an intermittent 60 Hz mains hum when music is paused, though neither detracts significantly from daily listening.
The compact EHA-1 Energizer provides straightforward controls alongside two standout features: a physical channel (L/R) balance knob, as well as a dedicated bass boost switch. To say both of these features are welcome would be an understatement; all audiophile amplifiers should have features like this.
The bass boost in particular is implemented particularly well. Rather than applying a steep sub-bass shelf, it introduces a wide peak boost centered around 60 Hz. This addition effectively fills in the upper bass and lower midrange, rebalancing the default tuning and transforming the EH-1 from a niche, lean headphone into a versatile, engaging all-rounder.
Acoustically, the EH-1 delivers the classic, weightless presentation characteristic of electrostatic designs. In its stock configuration, it presents a lean, bass-light frequency response with a forward 1 kHz midrange and a biting 4 kHz upper-midrange rise. However, its low acoustic impedance, minimal real-ear positional variation, and exceptional sense of physical openness make it one of the absolute best EQ platforms available under $1,000.
