A phone call would be great. I am new to DAC/AMP's.

The G5 packs some serious power and the sound quality is outstanding. I'm actually very surprised at just how good the G5 preforms. The Bluetooth functionality is the thing that surprised me the most. I can’t tell any loss of quality going from my phone on a Bluetooth connection or a USB-C connection. This is a small ish device however it packs some serious power and has a very clean and clear sound. I bought it to take with me while traveling and I’ve actually been using it on my desk top for all my IEM’s however it will actually drive my HiFiMan HE1000 Stealth’s as well. Overall I’m very impressed with what Topping has done and I’m looking forward to what they will do in the future! Great product.
My DAC/Amp experience: phones with headphone jacks, fii0 k7, ifi go blu, fii0 btrs15, and now topping G5. All amps sound the same to me. Turn the nob volume goes up. I turn the volume up until I can hear the smallest details in the music I listen to. However, sometimes turning the volume up makes the music painful. I thought this was just a function of loudness and my ears reacting to something that is too loud. Perhaps not. This Topping G5 is not like the others. It introduces a whole new bass shelf to my Moondrop Stellaris and the highest pitched noises don't hurt my ears. Infact the volume nob on the G5 is more like an intensity nob because I can go all the way to max without getting pain. I don't do that regularly as I am certain it would damage my hearing. I wish I could rate the G5 4.5 starts out of 5 because it gets everything about sound production brilliantly correct. Its the tech side where the device lacks. Really no adjustable software to speak of. The bluetooth works, but the range is... 8ft. Not a walk around the home kind of device.
In conclusion, if you are reading this because you love music, BUY IT.
I was very glad to find out that the Topping G5 has plenty of power to run my Sennheiser 650s 300 ohm headphones with my xDuoo X10T2 DAP providing the input. The bass coming through is as rich as using my Topping D50/A50 desktop combo.
Note that I am a classical music listener who likes music with large romantic orchestras: Sibelius, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff.
Provides a clean, clear, and uncolored signal. Plenty of power to drive my Hifiman Anandas. Build quality is solid and design is simple. Setup guide is confusing, and the small font is difficult to read. Port markings on the G5 are microscopic. Somewhat weak Bluetooth reception. Very good battery life.
I haven't tried many portable DAC/AMPs, but probably Topping G5 is going to be the one for me for a while. It has a good build quality and sounds great and powerful. If you like warm sounds like what Chord Mojo 2 (over $750) has, this might not be it. However, I like G5 because it delivers clear sounds, and in my opinion, its treble is better than Mojoe 2's one. Especially, if you have headphones with single ended connections over balanced ones, you might like G5 because (as far as I know) its 3.5 and 4.4 headphone ouputs sound at the same power level. FYI, I have tried only headphone ouputs (no BT and AUX) with my iPhone 12 mini.
The G5 really blew me away. I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it does. It is definitely a warmer/less analytical sound but for the gear that I own that tends to tire your ears after a while, this thing really elevates them. Highly recommend.
One other thought: I own a few USB DAC amps. This thing is obviously bulky in comparison but the difference is real. If you can live with the slight inconvenience, this is a great find.
I am still new to the whole DAC/amp area of audio, but knew I wanted something that I could not only use with laptops and desktops, but also one I could stick in a pocket and take with me on my commute to work. Although this product did not have many reviews, I decided to take a chance with it and, for the most part, I am extremely glad I did. I had the Ifi Hip DAC and the original Zen and Can stack from the same company (hereafter called the stack). However, I wanted something a little less colored in the sound, so decided to take a chance with this one. I absolutely love the sound on it. In fact, as I write this, I am using the G5 instead of the stack while working at home today. The first thing I noticed was that this really seemed to open up the sound stage versus the stack. If I had to choose one word to describe the sound, I would simply call it clean. While I still love the stack, and the option of adding more bass and using the "3d" function, I think the G5 is going to be my preferred sound in the future. Now, even though I gave this a great rating, that does not mean I have a couple of gripes; well, okay, one common observation and one real gripe that almost was enough to make me lower the review score by a grade. First, the observation. I am surprised how heavy this is. I personally don't think it's a bad thing as it makes the G5 feel more solid and that it will last a long time. I believe others have already commented on the weight, so I will say no more here. Now for the gripe. If you buy this device with plans to use it with a laptop or even a desktop, you'd better plan on buying some additional cables if you do not already have them. I think that of the cables Topping so "GENEROUSLY" provided, the longest (which I believe is maybe almost a foot long) is the USB-C to A cable. The aux 3.5 - 3.5 cable is only about 5-6 inches long, and I am actually okay with that. However, the other two cables are a joke! I think they are maybe about as long as my middle finger really limiting how you can actually use them with desktops especially. Of course, that will depend on your particular setup, so your mileage may vary. If I had needed to buy additional cables, I would have dropped this device a grade for utter stupidity. However, since I had longer cables I could use, I left it as is because the sound really is that good. On a final note, thanks go out to Sam with headphones.com for helping answer some setup questions for me. To summarize, this is a fabulous device with great sound at a super price. Just be prepared to be frustrated if you do not have longer USB-C cables especially.
Let me preface this review by saying that when the G5 works, it sounds EXCELLENT. The sound of this device for the money is really impressive. Unfortunately, the key phase in that last sentence is "WHEN the G5 works". My unit must be defective or damaged in some sort of way because I often experience VERY noticeable static/noise/distortion when using the G5. The noise is not constant, but it happens enough to easily outweigh the otherwise fantastic audio this device is capable of. After a month of trying to troubleshoot the issue, I have had no results. I own a variety of portable dac/amps and nothing I have owned has had these issues. I don't want to outright say to not buy this unit, because based on what I have seen online, my issue seems to be isolated. If you decide to buy this unit, you will likely have a fantastic experience. However, if you experience the issues that I have had, keep in mind that you can use the Headphones.com 365 day return policy which is the best of any online audio retailer you will find.
I cannot say enough great things about the Topping G5. But before getting into that, the shopping experience with headphones.com is impeccable in every way possible.
I’m relatively new to headphones, but have been working on improving my 2 channel speaker system since I had my summer job at Peter McGrath’s Sound Components in Miami, and the Levinson HQD was all the rave. Fast forward 40 years to now, I have pretty much maxed out my speakers, so I decided spend some effort on headphones.
In my two channel journey I had many of the hot DACs of the day from the likes of Spectral, MSB, Berkeley Reference and currently Meitner. Each one better than the prior. All quite a bit more expensive than a G5. That said, I see the G5 as every bit the equal of any of these. Resolution is spectacular, and yet the sound is totally relaxed. Bass is strong, treble is refined. The music just plays wonderfully.
Cosmetically and ergonomically the G5 reminds me of something coming from Nagra in Switzerland. Boy has ChiFi moved up in the world.
I’ve used the G5 with relatively easy to drive headphones, like the Utopia, JH Audio Angie and Truthear. I have yet to see what it would sound like on something like a DCA headphone, but looking the specs, it probably would be fine. I also have Focal Arche that I bought for the Utopia. It’s a fine product, but for me the G5 is simply much more resolving with the Utopia. That said, the G5 is not adding or subtracting any warmth to the Utopia, so they do benefit from some EQ, which is easy to implement on something like Roon.
Overall I would say this is a classic in the making, an exceptional product that with a simple iPad or iPhone will deliver SOTA sound.
