These IEMs sold out at CanJam, what's so different about them?
GoldenSound discusses his collaboration on the Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition true wireless IEMs, custom DSP tuning, and selling out at CanJam London.
Debuting at CanJam London, the Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition saw an overwhelmingly positive reception, completely selling out every single unit brought to the show floor, including the floor demo models. GoldenSound noted that while initial user feedback varied slightly regarding whether the bass was too heavy or too lean, the usual response from showgoers was remarkably positive.
The motivation behind the project stemmed from frustration with the general state of true wireless audio. Despite nearly all modern true wireless IEMs possessing onboard digital signal processing hardware, very few manufacturers utilize DSP correctly to deliver a reasonably neutral audiophile-grade tuning. Rather than starting from scratch, GoldenSound chose to build upon the existing Status Pro X platform because it already offered a strong hardware foundation, featuring effective active noise cancellation, wireless charging, LDAC codec support, multipoint connectivity, and long battery life.
While Status Audio granted him complete control over the acoustic tuning, the development process presented unexpected technical hurdles. Programming the underlying Qualcomm DSP chips proved far more convoluted and time-consuming than anticipated. To achieve the target response, GoldenSound utilized blocked-canal head-related transfer function data gathered on real humans as well as the canal transfer function of the B&K 5128 measurement system to refine his aim for the final voicing.
Though the extensive DSP overhaul required temporarily omitting the user-adjustable equalizer found on the baseline platform, GoldenSound confirmed that engineers are actively working on firmware updates to restore EQ functionality in the near future. The Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition is available in the United States through Headphones.com and globally via Status.co.
