Cup style More information
Open-back headphone designs are often higher-performance but have poor noise isolation and leak sound. Closed-back designs provide better noise isolation and leak less sound.

Open-Back

Wearing style More information
Over-ear headphones sit over your ear and surround your ear with a ring of padding. On-ear headphones are padded but rest on top of your ear. In-ear monitors are worn inside your ear canal.

Driver type More information
Speakers and headphones use a device called a 'driver' to create sound. Different types of drivers have different strengths and weaknesses, but can all produce great sound. Common varieties include dynamic, planar magnetic, and electrostatic.

Dynamic

Amp required More information
Some headphones require the power of an amplifier to reach comfortable listening volumes.

Yes

Connectivity More information
Connectivity refers to the method in which the headphones connect to the audio source. Headphones can be either wired or wireless.

Description

The Meze Audio ARTA is a flagship open-back planar magnetic headphone created for listeners who want the scale and spatial freedom of a high-end loudspeaker system without losing the texture, immediacy, and fine detail of headphone listening. Its warm-neutral tuning, physical bass response, and expansive three-dimensional soundstage are designed to place music around the listener rather than confine it between the ears.

Developed in collaboration with Rinaro Isodynamics, ARTA introduces the MZ5 HΩ High Impedance Isodynamic® Hybrid Array driver. This new 225-ohm transducer combines an unusually high-impedance planar architecture with a lightweight diaphragm, high-density voice-coil trace, and carefully controlled open-back acoustic structure. Meze then surrounds that technology with two distinct earpad tunings, premium materials, fully serviceable construction, and the sculptural design language that has defined its most ambitious headphones.

A Warm-Neutral Sound with Speaker-Like Scale

ARTA is tuned for a smooth, rich, warm-neutral presentation built around believable space and natural musical weight. Bass reaches deep and carries physical presence, while the midrange preserves the body, texture, and tonal character of voices and acoustic instruments. Treble remains extended and resolving without forcing detail forward.

The soundstage expands beyond the immediate space around the ears, creating the impression of listening in a carefully treated room. Instruments occupy clearly defined positions with meaningful distance between them, and recordings develop depth as well as width. This gives ARTA an especially convincing presentation with classical music, acoustic performances, jazz, live recordings, vocals, progressive rock, metal, and atmospheric electronic music.

MZ5 HΩ High-Impedance Planar Magnetic Driver

The MZ5 HΩ is a new High Impedance Isodynamic® Hybrid Array driver developed by Rinaro Isodynamics. While many planar magnetic headphones use a low-voltage, high-current architecture, ARTA operates at higher voltage and lower current. This design is intended to improve electrical linearity across the audible range while reducing heat and mechanical stress on the diaphragm.

The planar magnetic trace is 2.5 times longer than Rinaro’s previous implementation, while its cross-sectional surface area is 2.8 times smaller. This higher-density geometry distributes electromagnetic drive more evenly across the membrane, reducing localized stress points and allowing the diaphragm to move as a more unified surface.

The Rinaro Parus ARTA® diaphragm weighs only 0.10g while providing 4,650mm² of active area. Combined with the MZ5 HΩ Hybrid Magnet Array, it is designed to preserve transient accuracy, maintain stable on-axis and off-axis response, and keep distortion below 0.05% even at demanding playback levels.

Consistent Tuning Across Amplifiers

ARTA’s 225-ohm impedance reduces its sensitivity to changes in amplifier output impedance. This helps preserve the headphone’s intended acoustic balance across a wider range of properly matched tube and solid-state amplifiers.

That consistency does not make ARTA insensitive to the rest of the system. Its resolving ability allows the character of the source and amplifier to remain audible, whether that means the tonal warmth of a tube design or the precision and control of a high-performance solid-state amplifier.

ARTA is designed primarily for capable desktop amplification. Meze recommends at least 200mW of output power into 225 ohms, with 500mW or more preferred. A high-voltage amplifier with sufficient headroom will allow the MZ5 HΩ driver to deliver its intended dynamics, bass authority, and spatial scale.

Angled Acoustic Blades for a Cleaner Open-Back Design

ARTA’s exterior grille is formed from precisely angled acoustic blades that protect the driver while allowing its rear wave to disperse freely. Their geometry is designed to diffuse acoustic energy and reduce reflections that could otherwise return toward the diaphragm.

By controlling the acoustic path without heavily obstructing it, the grille supports cleaner transients, stable imaging, and a more naturally open presentation. The driver and enclosure work as a complete acoustic system, preserving the MZ5 HΩ transducer’s precision rather than limiting it with unnecessary internal reflections.

Two Earpad Tunings

ARTA includes two carefully developed earpad designs that allow the listener to adjust its tonal balance without software, filters, or internal modifications.

  • Duo Angled: Combines perforated lambskin leather and Alcantara® in an angled profile. This configuration provides a richer, more impactful presentation with greater physicality and presence.
  • Slim Alcantara: Uses two types of Alcantara® with perforations along the inner chamber. This configuration offers a more neutral balance with a smoother, rounder upper-frequency presentation.

Both pad options are designed as complete acoustic tunings rather than simple material changes. Switching between them gives ARTA two distinct but closely related interpretations of its core sound.

Sculptural Design, Built for Long-Term Ownership

ARTA combines futuristic, organic forms with the flowing lines and ornamental restraint of Art Nouveau design. Precision-machined metals, carbon fiber, and premium leather are integrated into a structure that feels sculptural while remaining functional and wearable.

Its 495g weight is supported by an enhanced padded leather headband and a suspension system designed to distribute pressure across a broad area. The circumaural earpads surround the ears, while the open-back structure helps limit heat buildup during extended listening sessions.

Every major component, including the earpads, headband, drivers, earcups, and structural parts, can be disassembled, serviced, or replaced. Acoustic tuning, mechanical design, quality control, and final assembly take place at Meze Audio’s headquarters in Baia Mare, Romania. ARTA is built as a long-term reference headphone rather than a product intended to be discarded when a wearable or mechanical part eventually requires service.

Two Premium Cables Included

ARTA includes two 2m cables built with silver-plated Linear Crystal Oxygen-Free Copper conductors. Each cable uses a dual-strand configuration with 161 individual conductors per strand, SoftFlex PVC insulation, and CNC-anodized aluminum connector housings.

One cable terminates in a 6.3mm single-ended plug, while the second uses a 4-pin XLR balanced connector. Both connect to the headphones through dual 4-pin mini-XLR inputs, providing dedicated options for single-ended and balanced desktop systems.
