Description
The Matrix X-SPDIF 2 is a high-performance USB to digital audio interface designed to deliver low-jitter, high-resolution digital output for modern DACs. Built as a complete redesign rather than a revision of the original X-SPDIF, it provides advanced clocking, FPGA processing, and direct I2S connectivity to minimize signal degradation caused by protocol conversion.
By combining an asynchronous USB Audio Class 2.0 interface, dual femtosecond clocks, and dedicated power regulation, the X-SPDIF 2 elevates digital signal transmission for high-resolution PCM and native DSD playback.
Key features
- USB Audio Class 2.0 asynchronous digital interface
- XMOS XU208 8-core USB processor with high processing capacity
- Xilinx Spartan FPGA for clock management and I2S data processing
- Dual Accusilicon femtosecond clocks for 44.1kHz and 48kHz multiples
- Direct I2S LVDS HDMI output to avoid protocol conversion loss
- Support for PCM up to 32bit / 768kHz and native DSD up to DSD512
- Multi-level low-noise LDO power regulation throughout the circuit
- Optional external power supply with automatic USB power disconnect
- CNC-machined aluminum chassis for durability and EMI shielding
Use case and performance
The X-SPDIF 2 is designed for users seeking the highest possible digital signal integrity from computers, streamers, NAS systems, or single-board computers. The XMOS XU208 processor and Xilinx FPGA work together to manage clock distribution, perform DoP and native DSD handling, and reduce jitter, particularly over the I2S HDMI output.
Dual Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators provide precise clock references for both 44.1kHz and 48kHz sampling families, while dedicated low-noise LDO power supplies eliminate high-frequency switching noise. The result is stable, low-noise digital output suitable for high-end DACs with SPDIF, AES, or I2S inputs.
