Grado SR80e Old Information
The Grado SR80e is the next move up from the entry-level SR60e model and delivers a bit better clarity and tonal smoothness most notably at the edges of the frequency range.
Deeply present and musically impactful with Grado's lively 'front row' signature sound, these classic open-back cans are an addictive gateway drug into high-end headphone listening. We hear the SR80e snapping into an especially clear focus with lossless or uncompressed music.
If you would like to take a solid step-up in Grado sound quality, try the SR80e. The SR-80e has very quick dynamics with a robust bass response and cleanly executed mids & highs, so lots of great musical detail is presented across all frequency ranges.
The overall signature is slightly smoother than lower-tier headphones and the completely open-back earcup construction lends a nice openness to the sound with very lively tone that is highly enjoyable with any music style.
The SR 80 e can be handsomely driven by most portable devices like smartphones, laptops or tablets with no headphone amp required. Some listeners feel a headphone amp adds better dimension and musical heft to the SR80e sound, but it is a relatively nuanced improvement to our ears.
The Grado SR-80e now feature the 'soft' style of mesh-covered earpad that completely covers the earlobe - NOT the donut-type 'large' Grado earpad style as earlier SR80 editions. In any event, all Grado earpads are interchangeable with all Grado SR/RS/PS series headphones.
The SR80e maintain the Grado flexible headband and basic metal height adjusters that connect the earcups to the headband, thus allowing up & down size adjustment plus 360 degree rotation. This feature becomes handy for laying the headphones down flat for storage or transit.
