Sound Performance Analysis

Experience the Focal Bathys MG's sound performance, which has been praised by Andrew Park from Headphones.com for its significant improvements over the original Bathys model:

  • Bass: The Bathys MG delivers impactful bass with excellent extension, providing a solid foundation for all music genres.
  • Midrange: The midrange is smooth and detailed, eliminating the 900Hz dip found in the original Bathys. This results in a more natural and less "honky" sound, particularly beneficial for vocals and instruments.
  • Treble: The treble is clear and well-extended, offering a crisp and detailed listening experience without harshness.
  • Soundstage: The headphones provide a spacious soundstage with precise imaging, making them ideal for instrumental music and complex compositions.

These characteristics make the Bathys MG suitable for a wide range of music genres, from classical to modern pop, and are particularly outstanding for instrumental and vocal performances.

Build Quality and Comfort

The Focal Bathys MG is constructed with premium materials, including an aluminum and magnesium yoke and a genuine leather headband. The ergonomic design features memory foam ear pads that ensure comfort during long listening sessions. Weighing just 350g, these headphones are lightweight yet durable, with a chestnut finish and backlit Focal logo that adds a touch of elegance.

Perfect For These Applications

For Critical Listening:
The Bathys MG excels in delivering audiophile-grade sound quality, making it perfect for critical listening sessions where detail and clarity are paramount.

For Travel:
With its active noise cancellation and long battery life, the Bathys MG is an excellent choice for travelers who need to block out ambient noise and enjoy uninterrupted music on the go.

Equipment Pairing:
The Bathys is a wireless headphone with a wide-range of compatible audio codecs that you can use with your favourite phone or DAP. The headphones' USB-DAC mode supports high-resolution audio, meaning you can get high quality sound wherever you go.

had an excellent experience, had been stalking these headphones across several sites and when I finally got to a place I could take the plunge for a good set, Headphones.com made the process easy, the delivery was fast and informative, and it was treated with the sense of excitement and personalization that fit the experience, instead of the sterile business transaction and disappointment that now that you've paid, you still want something out of them, that you get from a lot of other tech sites...

Customer video review of Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Most amazing headphones I've ever owned. To be honest I had a hard time pulling the trigger on them due to the price but once I had them in my hands and tested them out I was in love. The build is of high quality, without the plastic look and feel of most headphones. The sound quality is outrageously good even with just bluetooth alone. When wired with DAC I couldnt really distinguish a difference in most songs with lossless. Thats how good the bluetooth quality was. I couldnt recommend them more!

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Very comfortable. Deep enough that my ears don’t get rubbed, especially with glasses on. Great sound across all ranges. Noise cancelling is solid. Would definitely recommend!

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Amazing headphones. Great sound. Just one issue I noticed is the cushion on these is a lot softer and compressible than the original focal bathys so that’s causing the top part of my ear to touch the inside of the headphones.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

I read so many positive reviews that I thought I had to dive in, knowing that they couldn't stand up to ALL of those reviews. They do. I hope they are rugged, because they will be on my head or around my neck A LOT. I especially loved the ability to dial them in to my own hearing inadequacies. Day three, but so far, so GREAT!

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

The Bathys MG are great. I owned the original Bathys prior to these and the MG are a step up in most ways. The sound quality, noise cancellation, and comfort are noticeably better for me. Most everything else about the headphones are similar to the original Bathys. I have tried many of the other high end bluetooth headphones and these are as good or better than anything else I have tried in regards to a mixture of sound quality and noise cancellation. If your budget allows for it I would highly recommend these!

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

The Same but Different. I've had the Bathys OG since launch and have loved it as a travel companion and when I want to be untethered. It is an excellent headphone. I was hesitant to purchase the Bathys MG due to the increase in price and because it might be just the same as my OG. But with the awesome Headphones.com return policy, I decided to give it a shot and I'm glad that I did. While the OG and MG are similar in many respects there a few differences that make the MG a more refined or mature offering. Specifically, the soundstage adds a bit more depth and height rather than "flat side-to-side". This provides a more holographic presentation. Also, the bass while still punchy is a big more controlled, tighter and balanced with the other frequencies. I find the mids are a little cleaner and transparent - not as colored - however both a very enjoyable. The build quality and comfort is a step up as well on the MG. Build uses more premium materials and the comfort is better with larger ear pad openings and softer pads. Overall both are excellent in their own right. If you can swing the cost of having both, I'd go for it. If not, the OG is still an outstanding choice. As usual working with the team at Headphones.com was seamless.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Extremely comfortable with a nice soundscape. Tuning is not to my liking and the EQ function on the app is terrible. Pretty much useless. Sadly unimpressed. I was hoping for so much more. The Harmon scale tuning just seems off.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

The Bathys MG sound quality is the best I've experienced among wireless headphones, and is a significant upgrade from the original Bathys. I especially like the "Dynamic" EQ preset, and highly recommend using the Sound Personalization feature, which very effectively corrects for my own mild high frequency hearing loss.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

These Bathys Mg ‘phones beat my original Bathys by a long shot! Next trip out of town my music will be much closer to the sound I get with my home setup. Thanks!

Customer photo review of Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Worth the wait? Absolutely! Better than the original Bathys? Yes, but it’s all in the details. Sound is cleaner and crisper, details sparkle in the way they should. Soundstage is immersive. Build quality is definitely improved, as are the feel of the buttons. The cushions are more plush, providing a better fit for both comfort and sound isolation which allows the improved noise cancelation to be more effective. The original is amazing and these offer improvements in every department. Expensive? Certainly, but I am a firm believer in the saying you get what you pay for. These have the best sound of any wireless headphone I have tried. Close second is the original Bathys as well as the Dali iO-8. These don’t have the bells and whistles of the Bang & Olufsen H100, no Dolby Atmos or immersive audio, no touch controls, just the best sounding wireless headphones available—and I haven’t even used the USB-C audio and DAC mode but I’ve heard the sound is equally impressive in all listening modes available. If you can afford them, I can’t recommend them highly enough. If in doubt, the original are also excellent and arguably the better value. Oh and I love this color! It stands out in a classy and premium way. So good! I love them! My absolute favorite wireless noise canceling headphones and I own 2 dozen of them! Simply the best!

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

I waited a long time from my pre purchase and actually receiving the bathys MG and I have to say these did not disappoint and the wait was so worth it. As expected the look and feel of the headphones is top notch and looks like my clear MG. I have had the headphones now for a week and I’ve been singing them exclusively and although I already have every other Focal HP, I find myself looking forward to putting these on and settling in. The sound is rich and expansive and although I already have the original Bathlys I have absolutely no regret getting the much upgraded version. As for Headphones.com, they are the absolute best company in terms of communication and delivery even in this case when there was a significant delay from the preorder option to actually getting the headphones in for delivery.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Absolutely an upgrade over the original Bathys, but so is the price. The original MSRP of $1299 was already nearly double the MSRP $699 of the original, but with the post-tariff increase to $1499 it's even more of a leap. The overall timbre of the two headphones is quite similar and it's clear to me that they are siblings. That said, the MG definitely adds a significant incremental improvement to the sound. The overall sound seems fuller than the original and I found it more immersive. I like using Zimner's "Time" from the Inception soundtrack for its dynamic range and the instrumentation seemed more present and obvious with the MG compared to a more laid-back sound with the original Bathys. The texture of bass seemed more discernable on the MG. More startling, the track that accidentally played afterwards was Sir Woman's "Can't Stay Mad" and I was surprised at the definition I heard from the percussion at the beginning of the track. Literally made me jump. With respect to the ANC, I don't really hear much of a difference between the two. I'm comparing this in my home office with several fans running to combat the summer heat, but that is not nearly the noise level I would encounter on an airplane. I can say that I expect the MG to be at least as good as the original. Clearly, I like what I'm hearing from the Bathys MG, but that doesn't make it clear whether I would recommend the new version. Given that I'm now accustomed to paying much more for only incremental improvements to sound, I'm personally satisfied with making this purchase. That said, if my brother, who is far from an audiophile (he's an oenophile, so he focuses his purchases on overpriced grape juice rather than overpriced audio gear), a Bathys MG would not be a good choice given the price. Conclusion: if you want audiophile SQ in an ANC, the Bathys MG is a no brainer. If you're value conscious, the original Bathys (or even a Bose QC Ultra or Sony XM5/6) is more than good enough. I think there is a reason that Focal is keeping the original Bathys in their product lineup.

Focal Bathys MG Wireless Headphones

Are these ridiculously expensive? Well, yes. Do I love them anyhow? Absolutely, so very much. The sound is the best I've ever heard, especially when wired with high-res audio, but even regular resolution lossless audio is terrific too. Physical comfort is also completely wonderful, and I could wear these all day. I will try not to think about how much I've spent, but I've spent a lifetime searching for sound this good, and I have finally found the perfect thing. I hope they last forever.
